Rupi Kaur's "Milk and Honey" Poetry Book Among Most Banned Books in U.S. Schools
In a recent turn of events, poet Rupi Kaur has expressed her concern and disappointment regarding her acclaimed book, "Milk and Honey," as it has been classified as one of the most banned books in the U.S. The report, released by PEN America, has shed light on the alarming frequency at which Kaur's work, among others, has been subject to bans across various school districts.
Kaur took to Instagram to address the issue, stating, "Over the past year or so, 'Milk and Honey' has been getting banned in school districts across America at alarming rates."
She further expressed her worry over the inclusion of her book in PEN America's list of the 11 most banned books for the 2022-2023 school year, as "Milk and Honey" explores themes related to sexual assault and violence.
Published in 2014, this collection of poems delves into the realms of trauma, love, and femininity, offering a powerful and reflective perspective on these subjects.
Kaur recalled her own experiences as a high school student, seeking solace within the pages of books that tackled the difficult topic of sexual assault, highlighting the fact that many students turn to literature for guidance and understanding when they lack other sources of support.
The award-winning author expressed her worry for these students who rely on school libraries for access to such literature now that books addressing sexual assault and related issues are being banned.
Kaur also emphasised that the majority of the books on the banned list focus on topics such as LGBTQ identity, race, gender, sexual assault, and American history.
She voiced her deep concerns about a group of individuals determined to remove literature that provides solace to students. While some parents may seek to ban these books to protect their children, Kaur noted that many young readers actually seek out these books because they are going through similar experiences.
The banning of books raises important questions about the freedom to access literature and its role in shaping young readers' minds and experiences. The controversy surrounding "Milk and Honey" serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle between the desire to shield young audiences from uncomfortable or challenging topics and the need to provide them with literature that reflects their realities, offers empathy, and fosters personal growth.
As discussions around censorship continue, it is crucial to acknowledge the potential impact of these bans on young people's emotional well-being, intellectual development, and access to diverse perspectives.
