is this why you haven't published yet?
The most common thing holding authors back.
You could be about to change your life but something is holding you back. Fear.
Your amygdala is firing up to caution you from doing something scary. This is a behaviour we learnt many years ago. It was designed to keep us safe in our tribes.
If we did something silly and got ejected from the tribe it was bad news. Getting eaten by a sabre tooth tiger type of bad news.
Maybe you’re one of the brave few who don’t worry about social judgement but for the rest of us writers it’s a common fear. I would say in fact more authors fear this than others.
How can writers overcome this?
Well, the first step is to accept that this is completely normal. There is nothing unique about you feeling these emotions. Everyone feels this to varying degrees.
And so you need to challenge your amygdala and think is it useful to my survival not to publish my book because someone might laugh at me? It’s not going to make any difference. You’re not going to die or have any issues at all.
Sure you might read your first draft and think I could have made a few tweaks. But let me tell you a secret…with Print On Demand and eBooks you can always go back and make changes.
On top of that people will probably love your book. People are always worried about their book not being liked but the truth is they don’t think about all the people who would LOVE to read their book.
We’ve been publishing books for nearly a decade and I have never had an author say they wished they hadn’t published their book.
For many it has created:
- a new career
- a new income
- a new passion
- brought them more business or new clients
- been a dream come true
- and many other reasons
If you’re thinking about publishing your book - STOP. Just go ahead and get it out there. It could be the next bestseller and even if it isn’t it will be the start of a wonderful journey.
Keep on writing,
